An exam wrapper (A.K.A. Cognitive Wrapper) is a worksheet that allows for before and after reflections when students are taking practice exam papers or undergoing assessments. This exam wrapper is suitable for all subjects and is a fantastic way to improve the value and usefulness of practice assessments.
Please see the attached preview files to see the high quality of these double-sided, A4, colour, fully-editable, exam wrappers.
Exam wrappers foster metacognition in students (i.e. getting to think about how they learn best and what factors are influencing their academic performance) - exam wrappers are frequently cited by researchers as an example of effective metacognition in schools.
It is widely accepted that the use of exam wrappers is “best practice”: yet there are very few available online, and those that exist are often for university students and not suitable for younger people. This wrapper is designed for students aged 14-18 (KS4 & KS5) - and is designed to be fast, fun, and engaging.
This download comprises one of five exam wrappers, you can buy all five versions in our bundle (linked below) and save money by doing so: using a variety of exam wrappers will help students to engage in a broader array of metacognitive reflection activities.
Meditation is a form of “deep-metacognition”. Our meditation resource kit focuses on boosting learning-power, we see meditation as a metacognitive tool that allows students to gain insights about thinking and learning directly.
This resource pack includes everything you need to introduce meditation to your classes or on a whole-school basis: the focus of our meditation resources is, specifically, boosting learning-power.
We’ve also included six free bonus metacognition resources in this pack! All resources are designed for KS3 & KS4 students.

This download includes four PLC templates: teachers need simply need to add the list of topics for their respective subjects and they are ready to go. On the reverse side of each learning checklist is a series of metacognitive reflection tasks and target-setting activities: this enhances the usefulness of the learning checklist and helps students to use of their self-monitoring and evaluation work to steer, direct and regulate learning.
Personal Learning Checklists (PLCs) feature lists of all required learning for a unit or course: students run through the list, indicating for each topic how confident they feel in relation to it and how secure their learning is.
Personal learning checklists are a fantastic example of self-regulated learning and metacognition since students can use them to monitor and evaluate their learning and then plan and regulate it accordingly.
Personal Learning Checklists should be used by all teachers in all subjects: they are especially useful in subjects where students are preparing for formal summative assessments [exams] and, ideally, the list of topics on the checklist should be faithful to the exam specification they are using.
Please note: the preview images depict completed templates for illustrative purposes, teachers will need to add topics for their respective subjects/units before using the PLCs.
These ten worksheets are designed to accompany any main task or learning activity in lessons. They are suitable for teachers of any subject and as a whole-school resource. Please see the preview images.
We’ve based the design around established metacognitive theories that emphasise four stages of metacognition: planning, monitoring, evaluation & regulation. These unique worksheets are our best yet: they help students “think about thinking” with direct reference to the learning activity they are engaged in.
The pack contains ten different worksheet designs [see preview images]. When printed and cut: each worksheet is 1/3 of a page (double-sided) and serves as a powerful and time-efficient way to foster metacognition in students when they are completing a learning activity. The worksheets are suitable for teachers and students (11-16) of any subject.
Metacognition is a powerful way to boost learning-power: regular use of these worksheets will help students to use metacognitive learning strategies habitually. The colourful double-sided designs look great in exercise books and it makes your work with metacognition & self-regulated learning very clear for others to see.

The perfect resource for getting students to think deeply about revision planning, revision strategy, and the most effective approaches to revision in your subject!
This download contains a short printable workbook: with six sides of revision-planning activities it is designed to be printed onto four double-sided pages. We have included editable (.doc) and easy-print (.pdf) formats for your convenience.
The workbook includes reflection tasks that focus on:
Student strengths & weaknesses
Effective approaches to revision
Subject-knowledge evaluation
Revision planning
Revision strategy
Target-setting
The fun and engaging design is based on a medieval ‘Battle Plan’ theme and aims to inspire students to think strategically about their long-term approach to revision. It is ideal for use in lessons or set as a homework task - perhaps especially as a homework assignment for a school holiday.
Suitable for any subject.
Metacognitive exit tickets are quick metacognitive reflection tasks your students (11-16) can do at the end of lessons. This download includes ten printable exit ticket designs in five engaging formats.
These colourful, double-sided, printables are a simple way to foster metacognition and self-regulated learning behaviours in your students. Reflections are focused on:
Target setting
Strengths/weakness analysis
Learning-strategy analysis and regulation
Self-evaluation of learning performance
Metacognition is generally understood in cyclical terms: it involves planning, monitoring, regulating and evaluating thoughts, thinking and learning strategies. This resource focuses on the evaluation and regulation aspect of the metacognitive cycle.
Using this resource is easy: simply give your students a ticket each at the end of the lesson - students must complete the ticket before they are allowed to leave!
This workbook will help your students get much more from the documentaries you ask them to watch.
This workbook is designed to facilitate home-learning. There are so many amazing documentaries and videos students can learn from online: this workbook helps them to get the most out of such learning opportunities.
Simply set the documentaries you wish your students to watch and give them a copy of this workbook to complete!
The printable workbook develops independent learning skills, note-taking skills and mind-mapping skills in relation to videos and documentaries. It includes ten learning-sessions over twenty pages: teachers simply need to give students the details of the videos they need to watch for each session.
Teachers will find this homework booklet an effective way to enhance home-learning and reduce the work-load created by distance learning efforts.
This download does not include video-links: you simply need to add the videos titles/links that you want students to watch - the workbook does the rest!
If you are using a video or documentary in your lessons then this is an ideal way of using metacognition to help students get more from it.
This resource uses metacognitive questioning to enhance learning when students are watching educational videos or documentaries in lessons. It is suitable for teachers of all subjects and is applicable to video-learning activities on any topic: it should be used to enhance metacognition when students are learning from a video or documentary in lessons.
Using the resource is easy: the PowerPoint contains numerous prompts, each with three metacognitive questions. Questions for before, during and after the video are clearly distinguished and the integrated menu allows you to switch to the different sections of the metacognitive process with ease. Simply show one set of questions to students before starting the video, one set of questions during a mid-point plenary, and one afterwards.
The questions deal with a wide variety of different topics in relation metacognition and self-regulated learning: they aim to trigger student reflection on their own engagement with the learning process, thus allowing them to plan, monitor, evaluate and regulate their learning more effectively.
The topic of this Philosophy Boxes download is ‘Financial Awareness’. It is one of a series of PSHE-P4C sessions designed for KS2-4 PSHE students. The download comprises a P4C lesson/session that can be used multiple times with the same group.
The Philosophy Boxes Method is a new approach to PSHE designed for students in KS2-4: it is graphically stimulating, engaging, and fun. This download is also suitable for older students: but the format was designed with younger students in mind. In this context: ‘Philosophy Boxes’ represents a more student-centred ‘debate & discussion’ approach to PSHE issues.
The aim of our ‘Philosopy Boxes’ PSHE sessions is to bring deep, critical thinking to PSHE, exploring PSHE using P4C (Philosophy for Children) debates and discussions. One advantage to the method is that it helps students to practice their social skills through the activities.
The Philosophy Boxes Method presents students with a set of ‘mystery boxes’, when a student selects one of the boxes they are presented with 1 of 21 discussion/debate activities (in 8 different formats).
The presentation has integrated AfL so that teachers can test knowledge at any point in the lesson. There are 10 different AfL slides to choose from.
The design is colourful, animated, fun and engaging: all activities require movement and teachers can decide whether students are expressing their ideas purely verbally or by using post-it notes.
The nature of the design is that it can be used for short sessions (5-10 minutes) or much longer sessions (up to 2 hours!) - it allows for classroom practitioners to be flexible and adaptable. It can, therefore, be used in lessons or as a tutor-time activity.
Choose from out complete selection of our ‘Philosophy Boxes’ PSHE lessons here.
